The seaplane, the reef and the price of a water villa — three things that make or break the trip.
Why the atoll choice matters so much
The Maldives is not one place — it's around 1,200 islands, and each hotel occupies its own island or part of an atoll. The distance from the airport decides whether you reach the hotel by boat in 20 minutes or by seaplane in an hour. Reef quality and the availability of water villas change from atoll to atoll.
Three things that decide it
- Transfer from the airport — The nearest atolls (Male) — 20–30 minutes by boat; further ones — a seaplane, itself an adventure but pricier.
- Reef by the villa — In some hotels the reef starts right off the jetty; in others you have to swim to it.
- Water villa or beach villa — Water villas are the most famous choice but usually 30–50% more expensive.
How to avoid common mistakes
The most common mistake is choosing a hotel only by photos and price, ignoring the location. A long transfer after a nine-hour flight can spoil the first day, and villas without a reef mean you'll need a boat for snorkelling. A consultant who knows the atolls saves both time and money.
