Resorts in the province of Catalonia – rocky and golden-sand beaches

Catalonia is one of Spain’s 17 autonomous communities. It borders France. Its coastline is washed by the Mediterranean Sea. This 580-kilometer-long coastline, which belongs to Catalonia, is home to renowned tourist areas—the Costa Brava, the Costa de Barcelona-Maresme, and the Costa Dorada.

The region of Catalonia has a very distinctive culture. It is a country within a country, whose inhabitants speak Catalan and deeply respect and value their national traditions. A wonderful climate, the romantic Mediterranean coast, picturesque and diverse landscapes, cities that exude a medieval atmosphere, one of Europe’s most beautiful cities—Barcelona—the region’s vibrant cultural life, as well as numerous festivals and entertainment events, attract tourists from all over the world. This is the homeland of the famous artist Salvador Dalí, the creator of many Spanish architectural masterpieces, Antoni Gaudí, and the renowned opera singer Montserrat Caballé. Costa Brava (Wild Coast)—stretching from Barcelona almost to the very border with France—is an incredibly beautiful Mediterranean coastline dotted with resorts, featuring coves, headlands covered with pine trees caressed by the sea breeze, and alluring beaches. This is why the name “Wild Coast” has taken root, since in many coastal areas it is impossible to reach the sea because mountains and steep cliffs extend all the way to the water’s edge, leaving not even a narrow strip of beach. However, in those places where small, narrow beaches can be found, there are wonderful resorts. This place is especially popular with good swimmers, as the water becomes deep just 10 meters from the shore.

Several of the most famous coastal resorts in Costa Brava—Tossa de Mar, Lloret de Mar, and Blanes—offer you a vacation that’s not too expensive but still wonderful. From the Costa Brava resorts, it’s easy to take a trip to nearby Barcelona, visit the Salvador Dalí Museum, explore the medieval city of Girona, or visit one of the country’s oldest monasteries —the Benedictine Monastery of Montserrat. There is convenient transportation between the resort towns, with buses and ferries running regularly. The Costa de Barcelona-Maresme region, located south of the Costa Brava, is renowned for its wide, sandy beaches, which are a favorite among water sports enthusiasts. The region’s most famous resorts—Malgrat de Mar, Pineda de Mar, Santa Susanna, and Calella—are located here. The vast majority of the Costa de Barcelona-Maresme beaches have Blue Flag status due to their high water quality and compliance with environmental protection requirements. Buses and high-speed trains run between the resorts, making it easy to reach Barcelona. Nearby are the uninhabited Medes Islands, protected by environmentalists, which are a wonderful place for diving. The crystal-clear water allows you to observe the unique marine life.

The Costa Dorada (Golden Coast) and the Costa de Barcelona-Garraf, located south of Barcelona, are also known as the Golden Coast. The sand here is indeed golden. The coastline is characterized by a sea that gradually deepens, as well as small, indented cove beaches. These wonderful beaches stretch for several kilometers. They are especially attractive to families with children. The Costa Dorada and the Costa de Barcelona-Garraf will surprise you with their picturesque landscapes, the region’s rich history, favorable climate, and unique nature reserves. The Costa Dorada is always warmer, with fewer rainy days and fewer clouds than the northern part of Catalonia—the Costa Brava. All tourists feel comfortable here, as there are plenty of places to relax and have fun, with a wide variety of restaurants, nightclubs, bars, and cafes.
