The southeastern landscape is dominated by the Sierra de Tramuntana mountain range, with its highest point at the summit of Puig Mayor (1,445 m). Air temperatures on the island never reach extremes. Humidity remains in the 70 percent range throughout the year. With 40 protected areas, this island is one of the greenest vacation destinations in the Mediterranean. The tourism industry on the island began to develop in the 1920s.
